Does this sound like you?

Low back pain is the single most common reason people walk through this door. It's also the one most often managed with rest, a foam roller and hope — which is why it keeps coming back.

"Isn't that just a massage?"

No. A massage treats the tightness. Myotherapy asks why your back has been tightening up for the last six years.

With a back that keeps returning, the back is rarely the whole story. Hips, glutes, how you load standing up and sitting down, and what your day actually demands of you — that's what the assessment is for. Loosening the sore bit is why it comes back in March.

"It goes away for a few months and then it's back, and I never know what set it off."

What patients tell Dale

Forty minutes. Nothing wasted.

This is not a warm-up appointment where you come back next week for the actual treatment. All four of these happen on the first visit.

  1. History

What you do, what set it off, what you've already tried, and what it's stopping you doing.

  2. Examination

Range, what the hips and glutes are contributing, which positions load it and which unload it. Testing, not guessing.

  3. Explanation

You get told what's actually going on, in plain words, before anything else happens.

  4. Treatment

Hands-on work starts in the same appointment, plus the two or three things to change between now and next time.

Dale Peirson

Twenty-five years of hands on people who'd been told to rest it. Dale's caseload is chronic and complex — the backs that have already been through a few other pairs of hands, and a scan or two.

He's the only myotherapist here, so the person who assesses you is the person who treats you, every visit.

Straight answers

Do I need a referral?

No. Book directly.

Will it hurt?

Some of the hands-on work on a long-standing back is firm, and Dale will tell you before he does it. Nothing happens without you knowing what and why.

My scan showed disc degeneration. Does that change anything?

It changes what we expect, not whether we can help. Degeneration shows up on scans of plenty of people with no pain at all. What matters is what your back does under load, which is what gets tested.

What if the pain goes down my leg?

Tell Dale at the start, and expect to be pointed next door. Pain, pins and needles or weakness down the leg are nerve signs — that is sciatica territory, and the spine and nervous system are a chiropractor's field. Mornington Peninsula Chiropractic is in this building, so it is a walk down the corridor rather than another search.

Is this covered by private health?

Myotherapy is claimable with most funds that include it in extras cover. Check your level of cover — rebates vary.
