Does this sound like you?

Headache driven by the neck is one of the most commonly missed causes — largely because the neck itself often doesn't hurt at all.

"Isn't that just a massage?"

No. A massage feels good on a sore neck. Myotherapy asks whether that neck is where your headaches are coming from.

The upper neck refers pain into the head convincingly, and it does it without necessarily being painful itself. What those upper joints do through range, what the muscles at the base of your skull are doing, and whether pressing on them reproduces your actual headache — that's what the assessment is for.

"I've just accepted that I get headaches. Everyone gets headaches, don't they?"

What patients tell Dale

Forty minutes. Nothing wasted.

This is not a warm-up appointment where you come back next week for the actual treatment. All four of these happen on the first visit.

  1. History

What you do, what set it off, what you've already tried, and what it's stopping you doing.

  2. Examination

Upper neck range, the muscles at the base of the skull, and whether pressure there reproduces your headache. Testing, not guessing.

  3. Explanation

You get told what's actually going on, in plain words, before anything else happens.

  4. Treatment

Hands-on work starts in the same appointment, plus the two or three things to change between now and next time.

Straight answers

Do I need a referral?

No. Book directly.

Will it hurt?

Some of the work at the base of the skull is firm, and if it reproduces your headache briefly, that is useful information rather than a problem. Dale will tell you before he does it.

Should I see a doctor instead?

A headache that is sudden and severe, or comes with fever, visual changes, confusion, weakness or numbness, needs urgent medical assessment — that is an emergency department, not an appointment. For headaches that are new or changing in pattern without those signs, start with the chiropractors in this building: the neck and the nerve supply are their field. Myotherapy is for the muscular and joint-driven kind, and part of the assessment is establishing that yours is that kind.

What if my neck doesn't hurt?

That's common, and it doesn't rule the neck out. Referred headache frequently comes from a neck that feels perfectly fine until it's examined.

Is this covered by private health?

Myotherapy is claimable with most funds that include it in extras cover. Check your level of cover — rebates vary.
