Does this sound like you?

Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow are two of the three things Dale sees most. They're also two of the most commonly self-managed — which is exactly why people arrive having had them for years.

"Isn't that just a massage?"

No. A massage treats the tightness. Myotherapy asks why the tightness has been there for four years.

With an elbow that hasn't settled, the elbow is often not the whole story. Grip, forearm load, how the shoulder and neck are sharing the work, and what you actually do with that arm all day — that's what the assessment is for. Rubbing the sore spot is why it keeps coming back.

"Toothache-like pain that has been there for years, but I've just put up with it."

What patients tell Dale

Forty minutes. Nothing wasted.

This is not a warm-up appointment where you come back next week for the actual treatment. All four of these happen on the first visit.

  1. History

What you do, what set it off, what you've already tried, and what it's stopping you doing.

  2. Examination

Grip, range, load tolerance, and what the shoulder and neck are contributing. Testing, not guessing.

  3. Explanation

You get told what's actually going on, in plain words, before anything else happens.

  4. Treatment

Hands-on work starts in the same appointment, plus the two or three things to change between now and next time.

Dale Peirson, Senior Myotherapist, at work in the Mornington clinic Senior Myotherapist · 25 years

Dale Peirson

Twenty-five years of hands on people who'd been told to rest it. Dale's caseload is chronic and complex — the backs, shoulders and elbows that have already been through a few other pairs of hands.

He's the only myotherapist here, so the person who assesses you is the person who treats you, every visit.

Straight answers

What if I'm getting pins and needles, numbness or weakness?

Tell Dale at the start, and expect to be pointed next door. Pain, pins and needles or weakness are nerve signs, and the spine and nervous system are a chiropractor's field rather than a myotherapist's — sciatica and radicular pain especially. Mornington Peninsula Chiropractic is in this building, so an assessment is a walk down the corridor, not another search.

Do I need a referral?

No. Book directly.

Will it hurt?

Some of the hands-on work on a long-standing elbow is firm, and Dale will tell you before he does it. Nothing happens without you knowing what and why.

What if it turns out not to be my elbow?

That happens reasonably often — the forearm, shoulder or neck is carrying it. You'll be told that, and it gets treated as what it actually is.

Is this covered by private health?

Myotherapy is claimable with most funds that include it in extras cover. Check your level of cover — rebates vary.
